A. L. "Red" Swanson was the second head football coach for the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions located in Hammond, Louisiana and he held that position for seven seasons, from 1931 until 1937. His coaching record at Southeastern Louisiana was 41 wins, 17 losses, and 4 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him second at Southeastern Louisiana in total wins and first at Southeastern Louisiana in winning percentage (.694).[1]

From 1931 through 1937 he served as the head football coach of Southeastern Louisiana University. He compiled a record of 41–17–4. From 1943-1945 he served as head coach of the LSU Tigers baseball team. His record as LSU's baseball coach is 27–21. During the 1944-1945 LSU Tigers basketball season, he served as coach for six games, compiling a 4–2 record.

In 1950 he coached the USL football team. The team finished with a 5–4 record.

Red's son, also nicknamed Red Swanson, was a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball from 1955to 1957.
